Report of Todoroki Tag Rugby Tournament

25 May (Sat) 9:00~11:30
We pulled together 3 Ninjas, 1 Super Ninja, 4 coaches and Emi-san to show some SIRC presence on a glorious pre-rainy season day at the Todoroki Athletic Stadium. The venue was the newly renovated home ground for Kawasaki Frontale, the J1 soccer team, and also the stadium hosting the GB Olympic team with an immaculate grass pitch (which came with strict rules prohibiting any liquids other than water on the pitch but it was all worth it!).

We had a very warm welcome by the Kawasaki City RFU Chairman hosting the event and were greeted by the Kawasaki City Rugby School who invited our kids to join their squad to make combined teams. Our kids blended in nicely as the Kawasaki coaches led a warm-up session whilst our coaches took notes on how we could incorporate some of the drills in our own training.

Miki Naito, who only joined the Super Ninjas earlier this month, held her own as she joined the Kawasaki U5 team to play 2 games. She got stuck into the games right from the start but her moment of glory was when she caught the opposition napping, picking up the ball for a quick restart and blasting through the defense beating her opposite number to the try line. It was also a great opportunity to make new friends and learn from all the other friendly coaches.

Our 3 Ninjas got to show their stuff in the second half of the 2 U8 games. They worked very well with 2 other Kawasaki kids, as the ball seemed to make its way through everyone’s hands. There was also lot of communication going on as they spaced themselves out nicely across the pitch with Eito Shimada going as far as taking the initiative to devise their own defense formation. Eagle-eye Hiroyuki Naito was snatching tags left right and centre denying the opposition of a number of try scoring opportunities. Rio Kawakita showed her silky skills weaving through the defense and was also quick to offload the ball to her teammates who followed in support. All 3 of them had their share of good runs making use of the open spaces and scoring a few tries along the way which resulted in 2 well-deserved victories for the Kawasaki/Shibuya combined team.

All in all a fun day out and a learning experience for both kids and coaches!
